Westbam was born on 4 Mar 1965 in Münster, Germany. The first piece of music that he can remember is the Radetzky March, which he hears at the carnival. As a child he is inspired by Norbert, his kindergarten teacher, who builds a synthesizer that can only produce one sound reminiscent of a ping-pong ball being hit. As a teenager, Westbam is a punk and starts the bands “Anormal Null” and “Kriegsschauplatz” at the beginning of the 80s.

During his project days at school in 1982, he enrols in the electronic music group with his classmate Klaus Jankuhn . Since then, he and Jankuhn still produce music together. In 1983 he makes his debut as a DJ at the Odeon club in Münster. He decides to start his very first set at the beginning of the evening with the Sid Vicious version of “I Did it My Way”.
